Selling French wines in a fine grocery store contributes to highlighting an essential sector of the French economy and an integral part of the country's heritage.

Vin & Société and the National Committee of Wine Interprofessions (CNIV), two representative organizations of the vine and wine actors in France, published at the beginning of 2024 an exclusive study by Deloitte intended to measure the socio-economic contribution of the wine sector, its share in France's GDP, and its employment.

According to this study, the sector is a significant source of wealth and jobs for France. It supports 440,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs across the country, accounting for more than 2% of jobs in France. Despite a historic decline in wine consumption (-70% over 60 years), there has been a recent resurgence in the popularity of high-quality wines among consumers.

Among the key findings of the study:

  • The specialized wine sector, from winegrowers to restaurants, generates a turnover of 60 billion euros.
  • With 33 billion euros injected into other sectors of the French economy that support its activity, the wine sector generates a total turnover of 92 billion euros in France.
  • The value added by the sector amounts to more than 32 billion euros, representing 1.4% of the GDP in 2022.
  • The sector contributes 6.4 billion euros in tax revenues (including VAT) to public finances.
  • The actors involved throughout the wine production and marketing process in France, "from the soil to the glass," represent 254,000 full-time jobs (FTE), nearly 20% of agricultural FTEs.
  • An additional 186,000 FTEs are supported by the sector's ripple effects, bringing the total to 440,000 FTEs.

For Samuel Montgermont, president of Vin & Société, and Bernard Farges, president of CNIV: “This study is a valuable tool to objectively measure the concrete contributions of our sector. We knew about the symbolic, cultural, and heritage weight of wine. We now precisely understand the virtuous circle it creates around itself for thousands of businesses and our economy. At a time when we face multiple crises (deconsumption, climate crisis, etc.), this study proves that the wine sector remains resilient and contributive. It plays a crucial role in the economic dynamism of France. However, this vitality should not overshadow the magnitude of the challenges ahead."

In addition to wine shops, selling and promoting French wines in fine grocery stores helps to consolidate an essential sector of French agriculture. It also highlights one of the French gastronomic heritages that can be found each year in the aisles of the Gourmet Selection fair.
